The Skinny on Skivvies

Earlier this week, I had a dinner/shopping excursion with Ryan, an ex in town from San Francisco. While perusing the wares at Uniqlo, we found ourselves standing amidst the underwear fixtures, where he posed an interesting question.

What kind of underwear should a guy wear?

I laughed, not only because I found it slightly inappropriate, but also because of the way he stood there looking at me, dead serious, as if I he thought I might have some kind of valuable insight to offer on the subject.

So admidst the array of boxers, briefs, and boxer-briefs, I found myself ruminating on the subject of skivvies. Ry brought up the point that boxers had been rendered completely impractical by the narrow fit of most trousers and jeans these days. Even boxer briefs resulted in unsightly bunching (in case you were wondering, he gave me full permissions to blog about this).

Which leaves us with tighty-whities. The advent of skinny jeans has led not only to myriad awkward hookup situations, but also to a resurgence in the popularity of the brief. Judging from the sparse inventory at Uniqlo, Ryan and I were not the first to have arrived at this conclusion, as they were sold down in almost all their brief options. What's a boy to do? There has to be someplace online that sells good briefs. Since googling bore mostly gay soft-core search results, I'm just going to have to conduct more research and post a follow-up. In the meantime, I'd like to open up the forum to readers and ask, if I may, where you shop for your undies, what your favorites are, etc. Feel free to weigh in in the comments section.

Mals, you are so late on this. We're all wearing THONGS now!

  2. But seriously. Fruit of the Loom.

  3. Check out the latest GQ, all you need.

  4. Go commando, especially in California.

  5. @mark: i know, totally late. so fruit of the loom, eh? are your initials stitched on the inside?

@andy: thanks -- i'll be sure to check it out!

@jz: really? you don't find it uncomfortable to go commando with tight pants? i'd imagine there'd be some chafing involved without friction-reducing underpants between you and your calvins.

  6. Not really, especially if the jeans are broken in. I also have some really close fitting low rise boxers from 2xist I got at Saks.

  7. Oh the options are endless, but I prefer briefs (with the occasional boxer-brief thrown in for variety). Jockeys are always the classic and not-too-flashy choice. American Apparel also makes a nice pair, which have been my most recent fixation. But Paul Frank does such fun and interesting ones that I've been tempted to convert.

  8. @jz: ooh, low-rise is a great idea. thanks -- haven't checked out 2xist yet.

@marcus: yeah, so far american apparel seem to be the model of choice among most guys i know. i didn't even know paul frank made undies. thanks for the tip - will def. check it out. p.s. - love your tie. what is it?

  9. With the slimmer fit of pants, shorter boxer briefs (usually called trunks) offer I think the best option. No unsightly VtwL (visible tighty whitey lines). C-in2 is a newer men's underwear brand that sells trunks that are comfortable and made of premium materials (pima cotton, bamboo, and soft microfiber waistbands).
