Last week at work we visited designer James Coviello and shot some looks from his Fall '08 collection, including the beautiful, ostentatious headpieces he recently sent down the runway at New York Fashion Week. In case you didn't catch it, the showstoppping accoutrements were bededecked with brilliant plumes and all manner of mixed media. Prior to this visit, I had no idea that James had a background in millinery, but it was obvious after examining the truly unique, whimsical, and masterfully crafted headpieces that he knew exactly what he was doing. In the interview, he described the method behind the mad hattery.

Here's another shoot I worked on, featuring clothing from Aurelio Costarella, Operation Clothing, Chris Han, Erotokritos, Tom's Shoes, Frye Boots and Helmut Lang. The top in the first and seventh pictures is actually an ace bandage, which ended up being the perfect pink-nude. At $1.79 per roll, it's a fun, inexpensive option that offers myriad styling possibilities.

I hope it's back. I love hats, especially vintage ones. It seems like fashion is starting to come back to a fun phase where people will go beyond functional dressing.
ReplyDeleteI really hope so, too. One of the things we talked about with James was how New Yorkers seem to be afraid of color. We tend to stick to our black and gray, but people are starting to be more adventurous with accessories. A bold, vintage hat would be a perfect complement to an otherwise plain outfit.
