Cream Dreams: Winter Lace

There's something so lovely about off-white lace in the wintertime. Maybe it's because it conjures up images of delicate snowflakes? A few I've had my eye on:

Vintage appeal and pretty, scalloped edges. Joie Elvia Lace Top, $198 @ Bloomingdales.

If allover lace is too much, go for just a small detail. I love the sleeves on this silky, whisper-light blouse. Reformation Mark Top, $198 @ Shopbop.

Okay, so the lace is black here, but it's so fine and looks beautiful against a solid cream ground. Vasia by Ulla Johnson Anastasia Dress, $88 @ Urban Outfitters.

Holiday Gift Finds for Him: Pendleton's Tartan Robe

Most guys I know don't own a bathrobe and are therefore (lamentably!) oblivious to it's warm, cozy charms. It makes me sad that they're missing out, and nostalgic for the days when a robe was a mainstay in a proper gentleman's wardrobe, allowing him to shuffle about the house on a lazy Sunday morning or step outside to fetch the paper without appearing entirely unkempt or slovenly.

That sense of sartorial decorum may be all but lost on the modern dude, but I have a feeling this Pendleton topper might make him reconsider his stance on robes. The tartan print lends it a rugged feel while the slim fit hearkens back to the crisp, gentlemanly silhouettes of yore.

Pendleton Lounge Robe, $198 @ Blackbird.

Wardrobe Essentials: Perfect Winter Sweaters

I absolutely detest winter. Just about the only thing that gets me through, besides copious amounts of spiced hot cocoa, is the cozy cold-weather gear I get to pile on. Four sweaters I'm crushing on at the moment:

A lovely herringbone neutral: Built By Wendy Herringbone Loose U, $194.

A chunky striped cardi: Marc by Marc Jacobs Wool-blend cardigan, $330.

The perfect slouchy, marled sweatshirt: Vanessa Bruno Athe's Cropped cotton sweatshirt, $175.

A nubby sweater-tunic: Rag + Bone Greville Sweater, $325.

If I did the fancy cocktails thing more often (read: ever), my dream team of dresses would include these lovelies:

Plastic Island Nightcap Dress, $150 @ Dear Fieldbinder.

Alice + Olivia usually seems more LA to me, but I think a New York gal could pull this off, with the addition of some black tights and a sweep of liquid eyeliner. Alice + Olivia Marcia One Shoulder Dress, $275 @ Shopbop.

A.L.C. Scarlett ruched lace mini dress, $395 @ Net-a-Porter.

Coming Up Roses: Pretty Ballerinas Marilyn Flats Are Party-Perfect

As much as I enjoy the holiday party season, my feet aren't so thrilled at the prospect of teetering around in heels night after night and taking dizzying, champagne-fueled spins around the dance floor. I'm really thinking of wearing flats to my holiday soirees this year and was ecstatic when I stumbled across a pair pretty enough for the occasion. Pretty Ballerinas' beautiful Marilyn flats add the perfect touch of sophistication to a party frock or skirt.

Pretty Ballerinas Marilyn black suede rosette flats, $225.

Just What the Doctor Ordered: Steven Alan Does Handbags!

Loving Steven Alan's new handbag line. It's about time! I've got my eye on the Fall Doctor Satchel. With so many gorgeous hues, it's impossible to decide which to take home. At present, I'm leaning towards the grey, but would be happy with any of these, really.  $348, available in cream (sans chain strap), black, brown, and teal.

City Stories: The Ghost That Wore a Stylish Trench

After a bleary-eyed peek through the blinds this morning revealed a moving canopy of umbrellas floating above rain-slicked pavements, I sighed in relief and happily threw on a comfy non-outfit consisting of black leggings, long cardi over black tank, and black rainboots (which I planned to keep on all day in order to avoid having to deal with pairing shoes to said non-outfit). As I've gotten older (read: sartorially apathetic), I've started viewing inclement weather as an excuse to dress like a slob. 21-year-old me would have fussed and fretted all morning trying to devise a cute outfit, insistent on braving the storm in 5-inch heels. I swear that the ghost of this 21-year-old me visited me this morning in an effort to save me by showing me what I've become.

As I sloshed my way to work through lake-sized puddles, I was stopped in my tracks by the sight of an immaculately dressed young man crossing Lafayette at Houston. Said young man wore a beautiful, perfectly fitted trench-style coat with loosely wrapped scarf showing through just so, his dark jeans tucked casually into duck boots. As I watched him effortlessly maneuver his way through a minefield of umbrellas, I was suddenly struck with shame. While it's not uncommon to see women in New York who somehow manage to look amazing in the thickest of blizzards, its not as often that you see a guy don the dapper-est of duds to go dashing through the snow.  That's what it took for me to realize that I was approaching a slippery slope -- one that could only end in Spanx, mom jeans, and sensible heels. So thank you, ghost-of-21-year-old-me-in-form-of-stylish-young-man, for punching me in the face. We'll see if the next rainstorm prompts me to make more of an effort, or at the very least, change out of my rainboots once at work. In the meantime, I'm going to try to track down that amazing trench, which looked a bit like this:

Kai-Aaakmann Grey Wool Trench, $325 @ Gargyle. It features horn buttons

The holiday shopping season (which, according to retailers, begins immediately after Halloween) is upon us! My first stocking stuffer find for the fellas is a pair of D.S. Dundee's Fairisle Boot Socks. $20 @ Gargyle. Made of alpaca and lambs' wool, they come in a variety of great, winter-perfect patterns:

Everybody's Got Carven Fever

Everybody's smitten with Carven these days, and can you blame them? The recently revived French label's Fall/Winter collection is full of gorgeously feminine shapes in a palette of exquisite neutrals. Peter pan collars and cinched waists create an effect that's equal parts sophisticated lady and playful, pretty young thing. And the coats! To die for.
